Goodbye for now, Donostia / San Sebastián. Two be Goodbye for now, Donostia / San Sebastián.

Two beautiful weeks here and now we turn our attention towards the Camino del Norte, joined by two of our daughters for ten days of walking, talking, and gathering memories together.

We’ve fallen for the Basque way of life: the people, the food, the wine, the beaches, the coffee.

Travel always reminds us of what we cherish most at The Dahlia Patch, slowing down, noticing beauty, and sharing it with others.

We can’t wait to bring this inspiration back to the patch.

Hello to our flower farm community. Whilst I am mi Hello to our flower farm community.
Whilst I am missing wandering through the rows of dahlias each morning with a coffee in hand, we are enjoying such an amazing time in Godalming in the UK with our eldest daughter Sarah. Such lovely slow mornings, riverside walks, and the pure joy of sharing the Chelsea Flower Show with both our girls.
Now Darrin and I head to San Sebastián for a couple of weeks together before our daughters join us for a 10‑day Camino walk.
Hopefully I will be finding time to update the tuber page on the website so that Wishlists can be updated. Remember to add 2026 to your lists so that I know to make an offer to you in late July/August.
I might also add that I’m excited about this years collaborations and can’t wait to share this with you. Winter Workshops are currently on the website. I look forward to welcoming you back to the farm.

It’s funny how flowers teach you that roots and routes can coexist with one grounding you, the other carrying you somewhere else.
Even on the move, the dahlias travel with me, not in my suitcase, but in the way they’ve taught me to notice beauty and to slow down. For those that know me well, you’ll know that it’s not always easy for me to slow down.
These past few days, by private invitation, we’ve been roaming through Oxford University. The gardens and the buildings have been amazing, so full of colour, history and a quiet calm. Feeling very fortunate to have had this experience

I’m in Oxford, UK at the moment visiting my daught I’m in Oxford, UK at the moment visiting my daughters, wandering through flower shows, and quietly following the thread of research that first caught my attention years ago: the emerging science around the health benefits of dahlias.

An Oxford published study in 2023 explored the compounds inside Dahlia pinnata petals and found something remarkable, a trio of natural flavonoids that worked together to support healthier blood‑sugar balance. In both lab studies and a small human trial, the extract helped improve glucose regulation and calm inflammation in the brain’s metabolic centres.

It’s early research, not a prescription.
But it beautifully echoes the dahlia’s older story, once grown as food and medicine long before it became an ornamental treasure.

Since that study was released, follow‑up research has continued quietly.
Small teams in Europe and New Zealand have confirmed the same themes:
• dahlia flavonoids may help reduce brain inflammation
• metabolic pathways respond in promising ways
• the plant’s pigments show antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory potential

What hasn’t happened yet is the big leap, no large human trials, no definitive medical claims.

The 2023 Oxford study wasn’t the first time dahlias were linked to health, but it was the first time modern science showed a real, measurable metabolic benefit in humans, validating threads of traditional knowledge and opening a new chapter in dahlia research. That’s why the 2023 study is considered groundbreaking.

So here I am, in Oxford of all places, the city where this research first emerged, walking around flower shows and university gardens with my daughters who we haven’t seen for the past 10mths, feeling the lovely symmetry of it all. A flower I grow at home being studied just streets away. And given that I was 12yrs old when I left England for Sydney, it’s quite lovely to be back on familiar ground.
