Growing Dahlias From Cuttings. My First Year of Fi Growing Dahlias From Cuttings.
My First Year of Finally Saying Yes

I’ve grown dahlias for years, but this season I’m doing something completely new, I’m growing from cuttings, thanks to Gerard Oldfield from Highland Dahlias, who has insisted that I give it a proper go and as usual has provided such great support.

The truth is, I’ve avoided cuttings because I live between Sydney and the Southern Highlands, and I’m not always home to water them. But this year? I’m so obsessed I’ve started taking them with me in the car much to my husband’s horror (he’s very car focused!). Little trays of green hope travelling back and forth like precious cargo. And now I finally understand why growers rave about cuttings.

So why Grow Dahlias From Cuttings Instead of (or alongside) Tubers?
• Stronger uniform plants. Cuttings are clones of the mother plant, you get consistent height, form, and bloom quality.
• More plants from one tuber. A single tuber with multiple shoots can become many plants. It’s the most efficient way to expand your patch.
Cuttings and tubers aren’t an either/or. They’re a beautiful partnership.

Tomorrow, when our tubers go out into the world following our FINAL TUBER SALE AT 10am (please take note 😁), some will arrive with little shoots already forming. That means you have two growing options:

• Plant the tuber as usual and
• Take a shoot and try your hand at growing a cutting

It’s a gentle, low risk way to learn and you might surprise yourself with how easy and satisfying it is. If I can do it while shuttling between Sydney and the Highlands, you absolutely can too.

Growing from cuttings has made me fall in love with dahlias all over again. There’s something tender and hopeful about watching a tiny green shoot become a full, blooming plant.

If you’re picking up or receiving tubers early next week, keep an eye out for those little shoots. They’re not just the start of a plant, they’re your invitation to try something new.
Multiple Shoots May Not Mean Gall. This time of y Multiple Shoots May Not Mean Gall.

This time of year, Dahlia growers everywhere start to worry:
“My tuber has multiple shoots — is it gall?”

In many cases the answer is no.

Multiple shoots often simply means that the main growing tip has snapped, often during postage, handling, or storage. The tuber responds by sending out backup shoots which is a normal, healthy recovery behaviour.

Gall is very specific and once you know the signs, it’s easy to distinguish from normal shoots.
Look for:
• Cauliflower like swelling at the crown
• Distorted, lumpy tissue rather than clean, straight shoots
• Misshapen growth that doesn’t resemble a shoot at all
• Abnormal bumps that look fused or blistered

If the shoots are clean, straight, and emerging normally, you’re not looking at gall instead you’re looking at a tuber that has simply lost its main tip and is doing what dahlias do best: recovering.

Even with careful handling, a shoot can break, but it happens with early season shoots that are tender and easily knocked.
When this occurs, the tuber sends up multiple shoots as a backup plan.

This is not a health issue, not a disease, and not gall.

What to do if you’re concerned
If you’re unsure, here’s a simple pathway:
• Check the crown closely by looking for swelling, distortion, or abnormal tissue.
• Compare the shoots as gall does not produce normal shoots.
• Isolate the tuber if you’re still worried. Keep it separate until you’re confident.
• Discard only if true gall signs appear. Never discard a tuber just because it has multiple shoots.

Remember:

Multiple shoots don’t mean gall, it may mean that the main growing tip has snapped and the tuber is simply sending backups.

We’re closing the website this afternoon for a short pause while we finish our stock take in the shed.
As the tubers continue to wake and show their strong, healthy shoots, we’re preparing a final, curated collection for our last release of the season.

Our Final Release Sale will open on Sunday 25 October at 10am.

This final drop will include the freshest additions from the shed. They will be the tubers that have only just stirred, shown their shoots, and are now ready for planting. Each one is being checked by hand so we can give you proven, ready to grow dahlias for the season ahead.

Thank you for your patience while we take the time to do this properly.
We can’t wait to share this last burst of colour with you.

See you Sunday at 10am.

The tuber shed, however, is strictly off limits. Those beautiful shooting dahlias would be far too tempting for curious King Parrots.

Brace yourselves: our tubers are highly addictive.
Not “cute hobby” addictive, more like “I’ve rearranged my entire garden and possibly my personality” addictive.

Expect symptoms such as:
• Sudden shrieking when you spot a variety you weren’t going to buy
• Convincing yourself you have space. (You do not. You will make space.)

If you’ve ever said “I’ll behave this season,” that’s adorable.
We admire your confidence.
We also know you’ll be at checkout at 7:01pm.

Wishlist growers have already had their warm‑up lap — now it’s everyone’s turn to tumble into the glorious chaos.

Set your alarms.
Hydrate.
Stretch your scrolling thumb.
And prepare to adopt more tubers than any reasonable human should

We are right there with you having purchased another 60-80 different varieties this season - our rationale - it’s purely for your harvesting joy this season 🤷‍♀️
